Nigerian cardiologist warns politicians against health conditions

Following the presidential election in Nigeria, consultant cardiologist Dr Raheem Moronkola advised politicians to take care of their health during the election period. He explained that politicians can hardly sleep and many of them may have heart-related conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

“We should realize that it is not only those that lost the elections that can develop heart-related condition. Those that won elections too can develop an attack due to sudden joy and happiness which can cause sudden heart failure.” Moronkola added.

There are many risks of having a heart condition

  • Age: The risk for women increases at 55 and for men its 45. This can be due to that men have more responsibilities which cause tension and anxiety.
  • Family history: Those who have family members with heart disease are at greater risk.
  • Obesity: Having a high ratio of body fat to muscle mass puts a strain on the bones and internal organs.
  • Stress: It would take a severe stress condition to cause heart attack. However, having an underlying heart condition can accelerate the resulting heart attack.

Also, unhealthy lifestyle can increase the risk of heart condition such as

  • Smoking
  • Excessive drinking
  • Not going for medical check up
  • Staying in a high-stress environment
  • Not having enough exercise

Politicians, like most people have a stressful lifestyle because the whole country depends on the performance of their duties whether it’s before an election, during and after an election. They are expected to go for campaigns, travel and attend meetings. They would want to either keep their position or aim for a higher one. All this causes anxiety and especially if they already have a health condition, they have to be more conscious about taking care of their health.

As Dr Moronkola mentioned it’s very important for the politicians to be aware of their surroundings that can lead to severe heart condition and adjust their lifestyle accordingly.
