Do social media define you?

Man is a social animal. What does this mean? It means that man has to belong to a particular group of people or to a particular place. For that, many people imitate others to be accepted. Likewise in social media, most people will have many friends or followers. It doesn’t mean that all those people are “real” friends.

The public has become so much obsessed that everyone is clicking pictures or recording videos of anything and everything and posting it online. Then, the person will be checking after every five minutes that if someone liked, commented or shared their posts. Nobody can pass a day without looking at the posts on social media websites.

People will be scrolling to see what others are posting even if it’s not relevant to them. They will be comparing themselves to others just because someone has traveled to Europe or has a makeover or has a boyfriend/girlfriend or what food the person has eaten. But the truth is that no matter how much people post things, their lives are not perfect. Even the celebrities have to make sure they look good with makeup and what nots before they post their own pictures or videos.

By comparing ourselves with others, we are only losing our respect and identity. We want to be counted with others but in doing so, we forget ourselves. The social media is a virtual platform where you can connect with anyone. However, we have to very careful because people can edit their pictures to look good or even their videos. It’s very difficult nowadays to know what’s real and what’s not real.

Of course social media is great in connecting with family and friends and keeping up with different types of news. But the main issue is of constantly looking at our phones and laptops that we forget to look at the beauty around us. We give importance to “how many number of friends/followers I have compared to others”. This can create barriers in our society and can also lead to depression.

Because this attitude has become part of our lifestyle, we can’t completely avoid social media. We have to keep ourselves and ignore the “perfect” lives of others. Everyone is different and that is the beauty of life. As it’s said “one man’s food is another man’s poison” which means what’s good for one person may not be necessarily good for another. We don’t need to follow what others do. Do what makes you feel happy but don’t allow others to influence or change you.
