Facebook is again facing allegation. This time, the co-founder Chris Hughes said that the CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acquired ‘unprecendented and un-American’ power. Hughes, together with politicians such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren, has asked for the breakup of Facebook.
The social media has caused a lot of scandal. It has been used by terrorists and politicians to spread negative messages to the public. There’s also the issue of the social media illegally sharing users’ information without their consent.
However Zuckerberg, in an interview with French broadcaster France 2 said “My main reaction is that what he’s proposing we do isn’t going to do anything to help.”
He also claimed that the company’s size is beneficial to users and democracy.
“Our budget for safety this year is bigger than the whole revenue of our company was when we went public earlier this decade,” he said. “A lot of that is because we’ve been able to build a successful business that can now support that.”
However, politicians from all over the world, together with the Federal Trade Commission have been investigating Facebook. This could also cause the company a lot of financial pressure.
Despite Zuckerberg’s arguments, now not only Facebook but also other social media platforms can go through “structural changes” which has been proposed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
It’s very tempting because everyday millions of people around the world use Facebook and share their personal information. Therefore, in the light of these issues, one must be careful.
